 The Gypsy Lace Shawl

This shawl was inspired by Karen Aho's passion for color, which she insists stems from a day she spent with Gypsies during her childhood in Finland. Simple lace patterns are used on this garter stitch square to encourage experimentation with color.

Size: Approximately 36" square.

Yarn Requirements: Lace weight yarn in the following amounts:
Color A (center) 470 yds, Color B (2 narrow bands) 315 yds, Color C (wide band) 394 yds.
Requirements will vary if using a different yarn weight.

Needles: US size 5 24", or longer circular needle. You will also need a spare, smaller size circular needle.

Lace Panel Shawl & Scarf

Shaped shawl or scarf featuring a lace center panel and narrow “feather & fan” lace edging. Knit from the outer edge to neck with attached, knitted cord top border.

Measurements: Shawl: 16˝“ deep and 60” along top edge.
Scarf: 9“ deep and 32“ along top.
Size will vary with yarn used and can easily be adjusted.

Needles: 40” circular in US size 2, or size to obtain gauge. You may switch to a short circular as the shawl gets smaller.

Blocked Gauge: 28 sts = 4” in stockinette.

 The Spinner's Shawl

This reversible garter stitch lace shawl celebrates Arachne from Greek mythology and Spider Woman from Hopi and Navajo legends. Ancient symbols embraced by spinners, as well as weavers, lace makers and other needle artists. The shawl is knit from the center back neck down, and the simple Spider Lace flows into a Spider-in-a-Web border and edging. The Spider Lace repeats over 10 rows, so it is easy to memorize, and the border can be started after any multiple of the 10-row repeat, making it easy to customize size. Beads can be added to the last edging row if desired.

Size: For Shawl with 9 repeats of Spider Lace in yarn shown: 36" deep and 72" across top edge.

Yarn Requirements: For light weight mohair (13 wpi) as shown or a sport weight wool, 600 yards.

Inside a border of eyelet grass, rows of lace ripple like a river through the length of this lace weight scarf and stole. The end edges are cast off in a simple scalloped picot lace.
Designed to create symmetrical lace edges at each end while avoiding extra yarn ends to weave in.

Stole: 20" wide and 70" long.
Adjust length by adding or subtracting row repeats.

Baltic Sea Stole


Faina's memories of time spent on the shores of the Baltic Sea inspired the name of this lovely lace stole. She cleverly worked increases and decreases into the pattern that allow the seed stitch borders to remain straight while they frame the waves of lace that flow back and forth.

Finished size: 27" wide by 80"  long.

Yarn Requirements: 900 yards of sport weight mohair or wool.
Pattern may also be made in lace weight using a smaller needle. This will make a narrower stole, or you can add repeats for more width. Note that this will change the amount of yarn needed.

Knit in garter stitch lace from the center back neck down, the side edges are bound off in the lace edging, and the top is finished with I-cord.

  Blocked Size: Approximately 43" deep and 90" across top.
For a smaller shawl, go down a needle size for a slightly tighter gauge. This will use slightly less yarn.

Needles: US size 6 29" or 32" circular needle and a set of  dp needles in the same size.
